Indian Railways earned Rs. 22229.07 crores from 438.36 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight during the first nine months ending December 2004 of the current fiscal year compared to Rs. 20172.47 crores from 407.15 MTs during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 10.20 per cent.
Of the total earnings from the freight traffic, Rs. 9431.87 crores came from 198 MTs of coal followed by Rs. 884.24 crores from 31.83 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 1089.16 crores from 10.67 MTs of finished iron and steel from steel plants, Rs. 1048.56 crores from 26.73 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 1796.04 crores from 39.45 MTs of cement, Rs. 2365.34 crores from 34.41 MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 983.47 crores from 21.52 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 2017.69 crores from 23.43 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) and Rs. 2612.70 crores from 52.32 MTs of other goods.
Earnings in Net Tonne Kilometres (NTKMs) in millions increased by 8.17 per cent from 278477 million NTKMs to 301215 million NTKMs during the period.
Earnings per million tonne increased from Rs. 49.55 crores in 2003-2004 to Rs. 50.71 crores, registering an increase of 2.35 per cent. Earnings per net tonne kilometre in paise also registered an increase of 1.88 per cent from 72.44 paise in 2003-2004 to 73.80 paise in the current financial year ending December 2004.
