press note: update on relief measures undertaken for tsunami hit areas by department of road transport & highways, ministry of shipping, road transport & highways

A Control Room was set up which has started functioning from 28-12-2004 (8.00 A.M. to 8.00 P.M.) and is in contact with all the concerned field agencies as well as other Ministries. Telefax No. of Control room is 011-23739026.

Ø Five teams of officers have inspected the affected areas in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 30-12-2004 to 3-1-2005 for assessment of damages to roads in the wake of Tsunami attack. It has been reported that about 160 km length of National Highways and 520 km length of State Roads have been damaged. Besides, about 50 structures have also been damaged.

Ø There have been extensive damages to the road network and bridges in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Andaman and Nicobar Administration (PWD) has requested for supply of 6 Power Saws, 8 Generators, 20 Water Pumps, 6000 metres G.I. Pipes, 10 Plate Compactors, 100 M.Ton Cement, 100 pieces RCC Hume Pipes, 10 Hand Rammers, 500m flexible hose, 1000m ERW Steel pipes, etc. for restoration works. These items have been sent by air / ship depending upon the weight and volume.

Ø Arasalar Bridge on NH-45A near Karaikal in Pondicherry (UT) had been damaged. A bailey bridge has been provided for immediate restoration of traffic. As a permanent measure, a bridge by the side of the existing bridges is to be constructed.

Ø Superstructure of 160 metres long bridge over river Pazhyar in Tamil Nadu has been washed away by Tsunami waves. The Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru. T.R. Baalu has inspected the site on 2-1-2005 and has instructed for immediate restoration of traffic by installing a temporary bridge and later a permanent bridge. Following actions are being taken accordingly :



(i) A ferry service would be provided for immediate transportation till installation of temporary bridge

(ii) A temporary bridge by installing steel girders and steel deck would be provided within 6 weeks for immediate restoration of traffic.

(iii) A permanent bridge by the side of existing bridge would be provided within a period of 1½ years.
