The Vigilance and Telecom Monitoring Cell of DoT and the Chennai Police were successful in busting an illegal telephone exchange in T.Nagar area of Chennai. The illegal set up consisted of sophisticated telecom equipments like VoIP Gateway router, 24 port switch, 15 telephone lines were provided by M/s Bharti, while a 512 Kbps internet bandwidth on DSL connection from M/s Bharti and another 512 Kbps from M/s VSNL. This illegal set up was causing a revenue loss of Rs. 93 lakh to the Telecom operators in addition to loss of tax revenue to the Department. The illegal set up was bypassing the authorised and licenced international long distance operators, which was posing a threat to the national security as these calls could not be lawfully monitored.
The police have seized the equipment and arrested one person in this connection. Further investigations are on to nab other offenders suspected to be involved in this operation both in India and abroad. This crackdown also came in the wake of setting up of Toll Free No. 1600 110 420 on which the timely information reached the DoT team.
