In the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a team of 40 Health Specialists including Doctors, Technical Experts and Public Health Specialists have been deployed by the Centre to assist the local health authorities in providing medical relief. In addition to the 20 nurses and 20 paramedics which have been sent to the Island earlier, 20 more paramedics mainly Lab Technicians, Sanitary Inspectors, Vaccinators have been sent to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands today and are expected to arrive in Port Blair tomorrow. In all the 8 worst affected Islands, doctors have been deployed and the district hospital at both Andaman and Car Nicobar are operational.

The Director General of Health Services along with Senior Doctors and Specialists from the Directorate General of Health Services and ICMR are in Port Blair reviewing the medical relief activities. The team has been visiting various Islands to review the medical care arrangements. All affected islands have now been visited by doctors and medical personnel.

Sufficient drugs and medicines both preventive and also for treatment of contagious disease have been dispatched to the Islands. An amount of Rs. 60 lakhs of drugs have been dispatched to the Island authorities in the wake of Tsunami incident. Rs. one crore has been placed at the disposal of Tamilnadu Government to procure emergency drugs for relief work. Anti-malarial measures and vaccination have been started as precautionary measures. As per the latest reports received from the Regional Office of Health & Family Welfare as well as ICMR, no outbreak of diseases has been reported from any of the affected areas. Surveillance teams are in position to keep a watch on the outbreak of any epidemics.
