Khiehriat, is a sub-division in the Jaintiya Hill District, located on the southern part of Meghayala on the Bangladesh border. Populated by the Jaintia tribe who constitute about 41% of population of the district, this coal belt area is marked by low literacy levels and a struggle for day to day survival.

A group of locals had gathered on 31st December to meet their visiting MP Shri P R Kyndiah to put forward their demand for more funds for their sub-division, and ask for upgradation of the sub-division to the status of a District. During the public meeting, Shri Kyndiah spoke of the killer Tsunami waves that destroyed hundreds of villages and killed thousands of people, including a number of poor tribals in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Moved by the news, the people, in a spontaneous and surprising gesture, immediately collected a sum of Rs. 5 lakh and handed it over to their MP and Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri P R Kyndiah with the request that the money may be used to help the tribal people in distress in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
