Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri P R Kyndiah began his tour to the Tsunami hit area of Andaman & Nicobar Islands with a visit to the different relief camps in Port Blair.
Shri Kyndiah visited the relief camp at the ITF ground where a number of Nicobarese tribals have been given shelter by the local administration. Later he visited Adi Basera where all the 50 members of the tribal group of Great Andamanese have been located. They had been brought from the Strait Islands where their habitat was destroyed by the Tsunami waves. Interacting with the tribals, the Minister assured them that the government will give all help necessary to resettle the tribal people in their natural habitats.
Shri Kyndiah later visited the hospital where some of the injured Onges tribes are being treated. The Onges numbering about 100 live in Dugong Creek and Hut Bay.
The two-member team of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs that has been assessing the situation in the region since last week, also met the Minister and gave him their interim report on the steps needed to rehabilitate the different tribal groups. This team consists of an Anthropologist, Shri N.K. Ghatak and a Director from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Shri Tarun Kumar.
