Once a princely State, Tripura is endowed with a bewildering variety of landscape, lush green vegetation, diverse flora and fauna and a rich cultural heritage of a true multiethnic society. Added to its rich treasures like historical monuments, archaeological remains and pilgrim centres, Jampui Hill is its special destination that appears to have brought a radiant healthy face-lift to the State. The winter seems to be the ideal season for visiting Jampui Hill.
Lately termed as a hill resort, Jampui Hill is an abode of perennial spring. The area is under the ambit of Kanchanpur sub-division in northern region - which is more or less criss-crossed by undulating terrain, narrow rivulets and makeshift trails on the hill slopes and foot-hills with dense forests and rich vegetation. It is about 250 km away from the State capital Agartala which is connected by regular air service with Kolkata and Guwahati. Besides, the State is also connected by rail and bus service with Guwahati. From Pecharthal point nearby Dharmanagar along the NH 44 Jampui Hill is only 50 K.M. away.
At all the hill slopes abundant cultivation of orange, hitherto the major means of sustenance of the inhabitants, helps to transform the colour of the world into a unique synchronisation of green and orange to make golden lace. In fact, the Hill is predominantly a land of orange, the sweet citrus fruit. When the human habitation set there about a hundred-year back it started with orange cultivation. The orange orchards are everywhere, on top of the hills or at bottom - at the gorges or at the hill slopes. In the Hill this fruit is grown in abundance with its unique vigour, shape and taste. The Orange orchards in Jampui covering an area of 900 hectares yielded 16,000 tones of orange last year. Being affected by a fungal decease orange production in the Hill has decreased for the last few years causing the farmers as well as the Government much concerned. In order to rejuvenate the orchards and to give back their full vigour, however, a subsequent means of remedy has been applied as prescribed by the National Research Centre for Citrus Fruits, Nagpur. This natural granary is also famous for its healthy and soothing environment that attracts tourists during the winter and spring seasons every year.
This season the Jampui Hill wears a festive look induced by the enhanced economic activity around the orange production as well as the arrival of tourists. With the aim to popularize the site as an ideal tourist resort, the State Government holds Orange festival with the assistance from the Union Tourism Ministry in December-January when the valleys adorn herself with the golden fruits. The State tourism department has set up two spectacular tourist bungalows at Vangmun and Phuldangsei and makes arrangement of conducted tours for tourists. Travel to Jampui Hill has been incorporated in 5 nights 6 day bound Discover Tripura Tour package with the per head fair costing Rs. 1,500 (Rs. 1000 for minors) covering MBB College-Ujjayanta Palace, Jampui Hill, Unokoti, Neermahal and Chaudda Devataa Bari at Puran Haveli.
