The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) is organizing a two day International Brainstorming Meeting on Modeling and Prediction over Indian Monsoon Region: Vision 2015 on 1-2 Feb. 2005 at its own campus at A-50, Institutional Area, Sector-62, NOIDA. A large number of leading scientists and scientific managers from premier modeling and research Centre from Indian and abroad, who are engaged in monsoon modeling and prediction are expected to participate in the deliberation. Professor V.S.Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology(DST) of the Government of India, will inaugurate the meeting. On this occasion, district level forecasts of meteorological parameters(maximum/minimum temperature, wind speed and direction, rainfall, humidity fields, surface pressure field etc.), proposed to be put by the Centre on its web site(www.ncmrwf.gov.in) for the benefit of general public and different sectors of economy will be launched by him. There has been a pressing demand for such a product for quite some time.
The Centre has planned to take this opportunity to felicitate Professor Ramamurthy on his being awarded Padma Bhushan on 56th Republic day. Another eminent scientist of Indian origin, Prof. Jagdish Shukla, presently working as President, Institute of Global Environment and Society, USA shall also participate in the meeting. The Centre shall felicitate him. He was recently awarded the CG Rossby Award, considered to be the Nobel Prize in the field of Meteorology. Both Professor Ramamurthy, and Professor Shukla, have played important role in the growth of NCMRWF into a Centre of Excellence.
The meeting being organized by the Centre is very significant in terms of its theme as well as the timing. There is a boom in various sectors of economy. An increase in awareness about impact that weather has on these sectors, demands for more accurate and customized forecast have increased over last one decade. Despite growth in the other sectors and globalization, India still depends heavily on its agricultural production. India has suffered from two severe droughts in three years and Government has rightly decided to take urgent steps about improving the quality of the forecasts over various spatial and temporal ranges. At present NCMRWF is the only Centre in the country which has an end-to-end system for generating global and regional meteorological forecasts using sophisticated mathematical models, a technique known as Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP), and the required high end computing resources to carry out the task. The NCMRWF has taken up the task of developing strategy and roadmap in bringing about the desired improvement in quality of forecasts and customize them for various sectors/ user agencies. The proposed meeting is a part of this strategy. The aim of the meeting is to review current status and develop a road map for providing accurate weather prediction. Another aim is to bring synergy in efforts being made by various Centres in the country engaged in related activities. One of the important outcome of the upcoming Brainstorming Meeting is to bring out the vision document to accelerate improvement in NWP guidance for weather forecasting over Indian Monsoon Region.
