The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a marginal decrease of 0.39 percentage points during December 2004. It went down from 4.17% in November 2004 to 3.78% in December 2004. In December 2003, the inflation rate was 3.72 %.
The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for October 2004 (base 1982-100) also went down by four points to stand at 521 (five hundred twenty one) points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in the prices of Arhar Dal, Groundnut Oil, Onions, Vegetables and Fruits etc.
The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 54 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 18 points and in 6 centres it remained constant whereas in another 10 centres it recorded a increase of 1 to 12 points when compared to the previous month.
During the month, Howrah centre experienced the maximum decrease of 18 points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in prices of Fresh Fish, Onions and Vegetables and Fruits, Gur etc.
Thiruvananthapuram Centre experienced a maximum increase of 12 points. The increase is mainly due to the rise in prices of Rice, Fish Fresh, Dry Fish, Sugar, Pan Leaf etc. However, the index remained stationery in 6 centres viz. Jharia, Hyderabad, Guntur, Noamundi, Solapur and Visakhapatnam.
The index in respect of six main centres for October 2004 stood at the following level: -
