Free STD Telephone booths have been provided by the BSNL at 11 Relief Camps located in Port Blair. As part of restoration of communication facilities in the Tsunami-affected areas the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) team has commissioned INMARSAT Telephone at Teressa Island. STD services to R.K. Pur exchange has been restored with the commissioning of Multiple-Channel Per Carrier (MCPC) satellite equipment. One IDR (2Mb) satellite equipment has also been commissioned at Car Nicobar. With this, the STD lines to Car Nicobar Exchange has been increased to 30 lines. The second IDR (2Mb) is also under installation at Car Nicobar for restoring mobile telephone services.
Meanwhile one each MCPC satellite equipment will be sent to Katchal island and Car Nicobar Island tomorrow, to further augment the communication facilities.
