Thursday, January 13, 2005

The fisherman of Ramanathapuram and Thoothukkudi districts of Tamil Nadu have resumed fishing activity in a big way while the activity on the coast of Pudukkottai, Thanjavur and Kanniyakumari districts is picking up momentum. The fishermen, in north and central coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh comprising Srikakulam, Vizainagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna have started the fishing activity. Fishermen of Kerala who have not lost their fishing crafts and implements have resumed fishing in Polam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts. Fishermen in other affected districts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh have not resumed fishing activities since their crafts and gear need repair/replacement. State Governments have taken up the matter for early resumption of fishing activities.

The focus of relief and other follow-up measures now is mainly on providing temporary houses for those who have lost houses, providing wage employment, restoring infrastructure and rehabilitating the affected people so that they can begin their normal lives. In addition to tents, GI sheets are being dispatched/delivered to the affected States/UTs for construction of temporary shelters. 46,375 GI sheets had already been dispatched till yesterday.

The A&N Administration has again been requested to launch intensive combing operation in various Islands with support from Defence Forces to rescue survivors.
