The Committee to administer the Journalists Welfare Fund has approved grant of ex-gratia relief of Rupees one lakh each to three journalists from Mizoram. The Committee met under the Chairmanship of Shri Navin Chawla, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting yesterday and considered grant of relief from the Fund to the spouses of journalists who died on duty.
The Committee also decided to inform the various News Associations on the relief admissible to journalists under the scheme. Letters will be sent to all Chief Secretaries of States etc., requesting them to report/recommend deserving cases of Principal Information Officer, Press Information Bureau, New Delhi.
The Journalists Welfare Fund has been set up to provide one time ex-gratia relief to members of the family of the journalists who suffer loss of life or permanent disability rendering them incapable, in the course of their duty. It also covers cases of extreme hardship on account of untimely death of the sole breadwinner, who is a journalist. All journalists, who are citizens of India and are ordinarily resident of India and are accredited to PIB at the Headquarters of the Government of India or at the Headquarters (Capitals) of the State Governments, are eligible.
