department of telecom donates rs. 25 crore to the prime minister’s national relief fund

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) joined hands in contributing to the nation’s cause in the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster. The DoT has contributed a sum of Rs. 25 crore to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The cheque was presented to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh by Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology, here today. The cheque presented has the components of contribution of one day salary by the employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and corporate contributions of BSNL, MTNL and Telecommunications Consultants (India) Limited.

While presenting the cheque Shri Maran conveyed to the Prime Minister that the DoT has also risen to the occasion in restoring the vital communication facilities in the Tsunami-affected areas of Coastal Tamilnadu, Kerala, Pondicherry/Karaikkal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands as expeditiously as possible. Special Teams of Engineers and Staff of BSNL in different groups were sent to the affected areas for installation of INMARSATs/VSATs/CDOT exchanges with a view to provide the communication facilities on war-footing basis.

In a resolution passed today by the officers and staff of DoT it was resolved to contribute one-day salary as contribution towards Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
