Union Agriculture Minister Shri Sharad Pawar today released the 17th Livestock Census provisional reports. The Minister released separate Livestock census documents for the nation, and 28 States, and a combined census of Union Territories. The previous census was conducted in 1997.
The total livestock in the country stands at 485 million as per the date of 17th Livestock Census. Uttar Pradesh ranks first in total livestock at 58.5 million in the country. The crossbred cattle increased by 22.8 per cent and buffaloes increased by 8.9 per cent from 1997 to 2003. Indigenous cattle decreased by 10.2 percent. A clear shift has been observed in preferring high yielding animals in the country. The population of sheep, goats and pigs has increased by 6.9 per cent, and 1.3 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively.
The total poultry population stands at 489 million. Andhra Pradesh with 102.3 million ranks first in poultry population. The poultry population has increased by 45 per cent from 1997 to 2003.
The census was conducted in all the States and UTs, in a record time of one year, with reference date 15th October 2003. The census collected data from all households (rural and urban) on cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs and other animals. It also collected data on poultry sector, agricultural implements and machinery and fishery.
