Contributions to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund have gathered momentum with people across the country and abroad contributing generously. Donations in an unprecedented scale have been pouring in from State Governments, public and private sector organizations and individuals in the wake of the tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004. The contributions received by cheque or draft at the PMO so far (till the 4th Jan, 2005) totals Rupees 308 crore. The contributions range from Rs 500 sent in by a school boy from Chennai to Rs 10 crore or more contributed by some State Governments and organisations.

The contributions touched Rs 51 crore today. Among the contributors today were the Karnataka Government (Rs 20 crore), Railway Ministry (Rs 10 crore), Bihar Government (Rs 10 crore), Reliance Industries (Rs 5 crore), NALCO (Rs 2 crore), Coca Cola (Rs 2 crore), Murugappa group, Concor , HDFC, Dena Bank, and DAV Managemnent (Rs one crore each). Film personalities Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerjee and Karan Johar contributed Rs 25 lakh each. The contributions are also being made directly to bank branches and online.
