The Consumer Price Index for urban non-manual employees in respect of 59 select cities for December 2004, indicates that the variation in the index for these centres ranged from 0.6 to 6.7 per cent, with the largest increase being in the case of Asansol and the least in Gangtok. The Index released by the Central Statistical Organization of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation also indicates that the increases are 0.0 to 2.0 per cent in case of 10 centres, 2.1 to 4 per cent in 30 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 per cent in 17 centres and 6.1 per cent and above in case of 2 cities. As many as 33 cities have recorded lower annual percentage increase compared to the all India figure of 3.6 per cent. One centre alone recorded equal percentage increase, while 25 registered higher percentage increase.

The All India Consumer Price Index for urban non-manual employees base 1984-85=100 for December 2004 also released with the indices for 59 select cities, shows that it was 3 points less than the index for November 2004. At the group level, the index for December 2004 compared with the previous month, decreased by 1.42 per cent in respect of “Food, Beverages and Tobacco group”. The corresponding All India Index for December 2003 being 421, the figure for December 2004, shows a rise of 3.6 per cent, over a year.

In respect of, the four metropolitan cities, Kolkata decreased by 6 points, Chennai 1 point, Delhi 2 points and Mumbai 2 points, compared to the Index for November 2004.
