With the teams of telecom engineers and field staff swung into restoring of the communication facilities in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the telecom services in the island areas are returning to normalcy, barring few locations, Vijaynagar, Gandhi Nagar, Lepathy, Sawai and Katchal which were submerged and the majority of local populations in these places have been evacuated. The communication facilities in the rest of Tsunami-affected areas of the Islands namely, North Group of Andaman Island, Middle Group of Andaman Island and the South Group of Andaman Island and Car Nicobar Island were restored and the telephones exchanges are working except Bambooflat where coverage has been provided from the WLL system of Port Blair.

Meanwhile, the INMARSAT terminals sent by ship could not be delivered at the destinations of Champin and Terassa due to rough sea and docking problem. The two CDOT 256 Port exchanges in Kamorta are working with 263 DELs. In the case of Hutbay Exchange in the Little Andaman Group of Islands, INMARSAT terminal has been commissioned as the main exchange building got damaged. Mobile network is functioning in Port Blair and its surrounding areas. Efforts are on to revive mobile telephone facility in the Car Nicobar Island. Four VSAT equipments are provided to Andaman & Nicobar Telecom Circle to further strengthen the communication channel. Batteries dispatched to overcome power failure. VSAT equipment is being sent to R.K. Pur for installation. Hutbay and V.K. Pur will be connected to R.K. Pur by OFC and new exchange.
