The Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, Shri G.P. Garg, in the preliminary report following a statutory inquiry into the head-on-collision of 9112 Down Jammu Tawi-Ahmedabad Express with 1 JMP (DMU) passenger train between Bhangala and Mirthal stations on Jallandhar City-Pathankot single line section of Firozpur Division in Northern Railway, which occurred on December 14, 2004, has held that the accident was caused due to the blunder committed by the Station Masters.


As a result of this serious accident, 38 persons got killed, 21 grievously injured and 19 received simple injuries.


The Chief Commissioner has recommended:



The use of VHF (Very High Frequency) sets presently installed at the stations, which are accessible to many railway officials, should be forbidden for obtaining line clear for trains, with immediate effect.



Provision of voice recorder in Firozpur control office, should be expedited.



Route plan for underground cables laid among the track should be prepared and cable markers provided at specified intervals.


The preliminary report is under the consideration of the Government.
