The Central teams, which visited the affected States have returned. These States/UTs have projected the damage/reconstruction cost at Rs. 7000 crore (US $ 1.56 billion). The detailed damage assessment for A & N Islands is being made where the Nicobar Group of Islands will require more or less re-building. The Andhra Pradesh Government has projected the damage/reconstruction cost at Rs. 341.70 crore; The Kerala Government at Rs. 1358.62 crore; The Tamil Nadu Government at Rs. 4799.54 crore and The Pondicherry Government Rs. 500.65 crore.

Meanwhile the relief & rescue operations are continuing in full swing. Air Force has launched massive air efforts in providing relief and response. 35 aircrafts have undertaken 343 sorties, airlifting 1214.64 MT load and 10,840 passengers. Navy has deployed 18 Indian Naval Ship, 6 Coast Guard Ships. 9284 person in A&N Islands, 4500 in Tamil Nadu and 9950 in Kerala have been evacuated by Defence forces. They have also established relief/medical camps and one hospital on ship.

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is meeting the full demand of POL. Ministry of Civil Aviation (Indian Air Lines and Jet Airways) have undertaken 98 flights including 15 flights for Cargo. They have brought out 7137 passengers and 216 infants ex- Port Blair. They have airlifted a cargo load of 258.4 MT to Port Blair besides 2059 passengers. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have been entrusted with the task of overseeing relief measures for women and child in all the Tsunami affected States/UTs. The Ministry of Science and Technology is organizing brainstorming session in a workshop on 21st and 22nd January 2005 in Delhi to evolve a road map for Tsunami early warning system.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs have established 390 work camps for relief and response in the affected States/UTs. 450 Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan volunteers are engaged in 20 relief centers in A&N Islands. The Ministry has allocated Rs. 3.41 crore for relief and rescue by the volunteers.

A joint team of Department of Drinking Water Supply and Ministry of Water Resources is making assessment of damages and chalking out restoration plan for A&N Islands. 90% water supply has been restored in Port Blair, South Andaman Rural, Rangat and 80% in Mayabandar and Wimberlegunj, 60% each at Kadamtal and Degreepur and 50% at Campbell Bay. Restoration work is progress in other Islands except Katchal where assessment is awaited.

About 117 doctors, 20 nurses and 62 paramedics have been deputed by Ministry of Health in the affected areas and central medical teams have attended 13,940 patients. Additional teams have been constituted including psychiatrists. All children between 6 months to 5 years of age are being vaccinated for measles and being given recommended doses of Vitamin-A supplement.
