The number of Scholarships given under the Maulana Azad National Scholarship Scheme for Meritorious girl students belonging to Minorities has been increased from 1200 to 3000. Giving away scholarships to the recipients of NCT Delhi at a function here today, the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Smt. Meira Kumar announced special scholarship packages for Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir from this year in addition to the sanctioned quota. She said that the number of scholarships has been substantially increased in case of Gujarat from 28 to 500 and for Jammu and Kashmir from 40 to 400. Smt. Kumar assured that the total number of scholarships would be substantially increased keeping in view the population of minorities. Congratulating the recipients and their parents Smt. Kumar said that this is not small achievement as education of girls is still afflicted with various hurdles. She said that by educating a girl, we educate atleast two generations.
The Chairman of the National Commission for Educational Institutions for Minorities Justice M.S.A. Siddiqui urged the minorities not to look merely for government help but volunteer for promoting modern education. He said that 80 per cent of Muslim students go to Madrasas, which do not provide modern education. Justice Siddiqui said that modern and scientific education is equally important along with religious education.
The Minister distributed scholarships of Rs. 10,000 each to 50 students from the NCT of Delhi. The scholarships are given on the basis of quota based on population of minorities in different states/UTs.
