bel gives rs 2.6 crores to pm for tsunami victims

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production has contributed Rs. 2.6 crores to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to aid the victims of the Tsunami disaster. Mr Y Gopala Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL presented the cheque to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Saturday, Jan 01, 2005 at New Delhi. Mr Shekhar Dutt, Secretary Defence Production, was also present. Out of Rs. 2.6 crores, Rs 60 lakhs is the contribution of one day’s salary by BEL employees and Rs. 2 crore is the corporate contribution.

BEL and its employees have always been in the forefront of aiding the victims of natural calamities. BEL had built 500 cyclone-proof houses in two villages in Ganjam district of Orissa following the super-cyclone which ravaged the area a few years ago. BEL had contributed to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund during the Latur and Gujarat earthquakes and the floods in Andhra Pradesh, besides sending employees for relief work.
