The performance of 11 Infrastructure Sectors has been impressive during April-November 2004, in comparison with the same period last year, except Steel. Though the production of steel during the period was over 26 million tonnes, compared to nearly 25 million tonnes in the same period of 2003, it was much below the target.
The growth in Power Sector was up by 3.6 per cent, Coal nearly 3 per cent, Revenue earning Rail freight Traffic by point three per cent, Cargo handling at major ports by nearly four per cent, Fertilizers by more than 8 per cent, Cement by one per cent, Petroleum crude oil production up by nearly 3.5 per cent, refinery lower by point six per cent, Civil Aviation - export cargo handling up by 12 per cent, import cargo by 22 per cent, passenger traffic international by over 10 per cent and domestic by over 15 per cent. In case of Road, upgradation of highways increased by nearly 7 per cent. However, the growth in Telecom Sector was lower, compared to the previous year.
As far as the performance of Infrastructure during November 2004, all sectors except, net cell phone collections recorded positive growth compared to November 2003. Except Power, Coal, Finished Steel, Fertilizers, Cement, Crude oil and refinery production, the production targets were exceeded during the month in all the other sectors.
The latest report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on the review of infrastructure performance says, the areas of concern are Coal, Finished Steel, Telecom and Fertilizers, which have recorded production levels below the target during April-November 2004. The Coal production during the period was 1.77 million tonnes below the target, while Finished Steel was lower by 4.5 million tonnes. Fertilizer production was also lower than the target, by nearly 7.5 lakh tonnes.
