The latest Exception Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, monitoring projects of Rs.100 crore and above, says that of the 83 National Highway Development Projects, 61 are progressing as per schedule. Rating them under category A, the report said, no constraints are encountered in the 61 projects, which are in different stages of implementation. 20 projects rated under category B have reported constraints for which remedial actions have been suggested. Only two projects placed by the Monitoring Agency under category C, called for a review. Most of the projects cover different stretches of the Golden Quadrilateral and the north-south and east-west corridors (phase 1 & 2) and others relating to port connectivity. The golden quadrilateral Projects of the National Highway Development were targeted for completion by December last and the north-south and east-west corridors by December 2007. Besides, the National Highway Development Projects, there are others relating to four-laning and development of another 10000 kms. of National Highway stretches. The stretches are being identified keeping in view the traffic density and provision of connectivity to the remaining State capitals.
Till September last, work on 3837 kms. stretch of the National Highway Development Project had been completed. Out of 5846 kms. of Golden Quadrilateral, 3184 kms. of stretch has since been four-laned. Going by the present pace of construction, majority of the Golden Quadrilateral packages are expected to be completed by December this year, a year behind the original schedule. As regards the north-south and east-west corridors 653 kms. stretch has been four-laned so far. Work on additional stretch of over 3000 kms. is under progress.
The two projects falling under category C, i.e. the Ganjam-Icchapuram (Golden Quadrilateral) and Shikohabad-Etawah have been terminated by the National Highways Authority of India, due to poor performance by the contractors.
