Over 150 Members of Parliament have so far committed nearly Rs.18 crore for rehabilitation in the tsunami affected areas of the country, with the government having facilitated fund transfer for this, from the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. In separate communication to the Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes, these Members of Parliament have indicated the amount to be transferred from their MPLAD fund for tsunami relief work.
The government earlier relaxed the MPLADS guidelines to facilitate diversion of funds for relief work in the tsunami affected areas, following requests from Members of Parliament. The guidelines which stipulate a ceiling of Rs.10 lakh were relaxed for this. However, the works, permissible under the guidelines of MPLADS will alone be allowed to be taken up, for rehabilitation.
The requests of the MPs are being processed by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and the Nodal District Collectors advised, to transfer the funds from the MPLADS account to the District Collectors of the affected areas. It will be the responsibility of the District Collector of the affected area to get the work executed and keep posted, the progress of the rehabilitation work, to the concerned Member of Parliament.
A Rajya Sabha MPLADS Committee is soon visiting the affected areas, to identify the rehabilitation works that can be taken up as per the guidelines.
