Indian Railways have contributed more than Rs. 25 crores to the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund to assist the national efforts for relief and rehabilitation of the December 26, 2004 tsunami victims.
A sum of Rs. 30 lakhs from the Railway Ministers Relief Fund has been released to the concerned General Managers to meet the immediate needs for relief. Besides, Indian Railway Women Welfare Organization has contributed Rs. 20 lakhs to the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund.
Railway employees have contributed Rs. 15 crores as one day salary.
The public sector undertakings of the Ministry of Railways, such as, CONCOR has contributed Rs. 2 crores, followed by IRFC Rs. 1 crore, IRCON Rs. 50 lakhs, RITES Rs. 25 lakhs and IRCTC Rs. 25 lakhs.
The Union Minister of Railways Shri Lalu Prasad handed over a cheque of Rs. 10 crores to the Prime Minister on January 4, 2005.
In addition, all the relief and rehabilitation material going to the affected people from any part of India are being transported free of cost by the Railways.
Added to this, stranded people in the affected areas, who went there either as tourists or otherwise, are being transported free of cost to their native places in the country. They are being issued free railway passes based on the certificates by the State authorities.
The entire Indian Railway family are one with the affected people in this tragedy, ever ready and determined to extend all possible assistance to them.
