The Union Minister of Shipping Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T. R. Baalu today said that four-laning of Chennai Bypass Phase-I and construction of four-lane Phase-II would result in substantial savings of time and fuel. He was addressing media persons at the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of these works at Chennai today.

The foundation stone was laid by Dr. M. Karunanidhi. Thiru Baalu presided over the function. Thiru Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Thiru K. H. Muniyappa, Unin Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Thiru Arcot N. Verasamy, MLA were the Guests of Honour. Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Karunanidhi said travelling on Chennai Bypass would soon become a pleasant experience and better connectivity would result in faster economic development of the entire region.

Under the Project, the present two-lane Chennai Bypass Phase-I (length 19.17 km) facility is proposed to be widened to four-lanes including widening of two major bridges. It also includes construction of an underpass near Irumbuliur to facilitate turning of traffic from the Tambaram side and the International Airport to the Bypass. Service road has also been provided for the movement of the local traffic through connecting underpasses, since this is an access-controlled road.

The proposed four-lane Chennai Bypass Phase-II (length 13 km) starts at Maduravoyal Junction on NH-4, where a full clover leaf structure has been provided and joins NH-5 near Madhavaram where provision for a trumpet interchange has been made. The Bypass passes through Ambattur Industrial where a 3.2 km long elevated highway has been provided. NH-205 is connected by ramps to the elevated flyover. Eight underpasses along with service roads have also been provided for the movement of the local traffic.

The cost of the Project is Rs. 480 crore. M/s Hindustan Construction Company Ltd will execute the work. The work is proposed to be completed in 30 months. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Project was to be held on January 01, 2005. However, because of the Tsunami tragedy, the ceremony was deferred.
