disaster management teams constituted for andaman and nicobar islands

In Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Disaster Management teams have been constituted and people evacuated to 8 islands where relief efforts are now concentrated. The teams have representatives of the Department of Revenue, Agriculture, PWD, Police, Fishery, Animal Husbandry and Civil Supplies. There are no reports of any law and order problem in the context of relief operations in any of the islands. Retrieval and burial/ cremation of dead bodies is going on side by side. 1737 Central Para Military Personnel are helping in this regard and in law & order duties. All the islands have been surveyed and relief supplies have started reaching. The islands with small population namely Bamboka, Chowra, Little Nicobar, Pilo Millow, Tilanchang and Trinket in Nicobar have been totally evacuated. Diesel gensets have been made available and have been distributed in different islands. All the affected islands have been provided with satellite telephones and point-to-point communication established including police wireless system. Three Jetties; one each at Car Nicobar, Nancowry (Kamorta) and Nancowry (Champin) are fit for operations.

The Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation round the clock. Medical teams, Paramedics and medicines have been dispatched and 10 trauma specialists have joined them.

Tsunamis have caused extensive damage in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. 104 aftershocks of intensities between 5.0 to 7.0 on Richter scale have been reported so far.
