Indian Railways have earmakred Rs. 15 crores for the upkeep of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the erstwhile Victoria Terminus, a masterpiece of railway station in Mumbai as the World Heritage Building. This World Heritage site was declared by the UNESCO in July 2004.

Of the total amount, Rs. 5 crores has been allocated in the current fiscal year 2004-2005.

A committee headed by the Principal Chief Engineer of Central Railway has been constituted to oversee the maintenance and decongestion of this World Heritage site.

This Victorian masterpiece was designed by F.M. Stevens. Its construction started in 1878 and completed in 1888. The building displays an important interplay of influences from Victorian Italian Gothic revival architecture and the Indian architecture. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. The central main dome is the first octagonal dome adapted to Italian Gothic style building in the world carrying up atop an over 16 feet high figure of a lady pointing a flaming torch in right hand and spoked wheel in the left hand symbolizing “PROGRESS”.
