Train Management System (TMS), introduced in Mumbai Division of Western Railway, to manage efficiency, safety and punctuality of 1275 trains, is functioning as a pioneering device to operate a large number of trains efficiently.

Mumbai Division is the busiest division on Indian Railways. It operates 1007 suburban train services, 122 Mail and Express trains, 56 Passenger trains and 90 goods trains. It has two types of tractions—AC and DC. Surat—Virar and Jalgaon—Udhana sections are AC traction, and Churchgate—Virar section DC traction.

The suburban services in this Division operate on three-minute frequencies and carry 2.90 million passengers. Carrying capacity of a nine-car rake train is 2628 (both sitting and standing), which goes upto 3500 during dense crush hours and 4500 during super dense crush time. Its earnings during 2003-2004 from suburban services was Rs. 414.22 crores.

TMS comprises Real Time Passenger Information System, Mobile Communication between Control Centre and Suburban Trains, Online train movements and live signalling indications, generation of Management Information System Reports and Statistical Data, Software Modules for Time Tabling, Training and Simulation, Traffic Planning and Optimization.

TMS Control Centre monitors movement of trains, traces complete path of a train, online position of delayed trains, rake links and analyses actual traffic pattern and generates automatically Train Control Charts.
