The Union Cabinet today approved enactment of the Admiralty Law of India as contained in the Admiralty Bill, 2005 based on the recommendations made by the Law Commission and modified by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The Cabinet also gave its approval for repealing of the following Acts:

i) The Admiralty Offences (Colonial) Act, 1894;

ii) The Admiralty Jurisdiction (India) Act, 1860;

iii) Admiralty Court Act, 1861;

iv) The Colonial Courts of Admiralty (India) Act, 1891; and

v) Clauses pertaining to admiralty jurisdiction in the Letters Patent, relating to the High Courts of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras.

The proposed legislation will be comprehensive on Admiralty Law and would repeal existing statutes, which were framed by the British Government about 142 years ago.
