The programme was formally launched in Mumbai with an Awareness Seminar, inaugurated by Sri Subhodh Kumar, Textiles Commissioner, and was addressed by representatives from ITC, UNCTAD. The Seminar was followed by the two-day workshop on the FIT IN ACTION which was conducted for the benefit of the invited international delegates.
Two Seminar were subsequently conducted in Chennai and Delhi. More than 400 executives representing the Apparel Industry, Trade associations, Export Promotion Council and the Research Associations have collectively attended the seminars held at the three centres.
The programme being first ever conducted in the country has got major significance in the development of the Indian Apparel industry, especially in the changed international business scenario.
In the emerging unified market scenario, one of the key elements of competitiveness is the cost factor. Earlier, suppliers were at liberty to decide the price of their product and maintain their say in the market. Now in the prevailing customers market, the customer decides the price and in this context, the supplier with a competitive price alone will stay in business. In this situation, it becomes imperative for suppliers to be cost effective so as to be profitable in their business and to survive in the market. In other words, cost effectiveness becomes the keyword to competitiveness.
Productivity of an Organisation is identified to be one of the key elements that decides the cost effectiveness. With the objective of sensitizing the small and medium enterprises to become cost effective through enhanced productivity, the Textiles Committee also conducted two workshops on this subject. The first workshop was conducted at the Meridian Apparels Ltd., Tirupur. The workshop was attended by 25 executives of the above company alongwith their 15 suppliers. It was soon followed by another workshop in New Delhi which was conducted for the benefit of the SMEs in Delhi. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. S.A. Baba, Director, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
