The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru. T. R. Baalu today said that the Government is working on an ambitious programme to develop and upgrade the entire National Highway network in the country. He was speaking at the 10th International Conference on Strategic Cost Reduction Through Effective Supply Chain Management, organised by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, India.
Giving a broad outline of the Governments highway development initiatives, Thiru. Baalu said that the 10,000 km NHDP Phase III costing Rs.55,000 crore is likely to be approved by the Government very soon. The Government is also working on special package for the North-East under which over 6,000 km of road network in the North-East would be upgraded, he informed. Thiru Baalu said that the National Highway length left after NHDP Phase-I, II and III would be developed to a minimum of two lanes with paved shoulders.
Thiru. Baalu called for greater co-ordination between Railways, Road Transport and Water Transport so as to reduce costs and increase efficiency. He called upon the logistics and transport experts to provide their suggestions to the Government for better co-ordination between different modes of Transport so that the nation as a whole can benefit.
