The Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy inaugurated the BES EXPO – 2005, 11th International Conference & Exhibition, today. After inaugurating the Exhibition said that new technology creates new possibilities. Technology was instrumental in dispersing the knowledge all round and empowering ordinary people. The Minister said that broadcast engineers play a crucial role in the carriage of the content to the public. He said, it has been the UPA Government’s endeavour to enable the masses receive entertainment and information signals at a low cost. DD’s launch of the Direct-to-Home (DTH) service was a step in this direction. The unique properties of DTH are now being realized. The Minister added that DTH would de-monopolized and regulate the market.

Shri Reddy said that the Government is encouraging radio in the private sector with a view to make the field competitive. The Minister said that the Government was committed to making the Prasar Bharati a vibrant, powerful and meaningful public broadcaster, which would offer competition to the private players.

Secretary, I&B, Shri Navin B. Chawla in his remarks said that more attention is required to be paid for research and development in the broadcasting area and this needs to be made a major operational unit of broadcasting.

The three-day exhibition has been organized by the Broadcast Engineering Society (India).
