The round table workshop on content issues on TV channels opened in New Delhi this morning. Representatives of all stakeholders including content providers and carriage providers, cable operators, journalists, educationalists, sociologists and women groups are attending the day long Conference. Inaugurating the Workshop the Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy said that the meeting would facilitate a friendly and constructive interaction with the leader of media groups and other concerned groups, so that their suggestions can be incorporated in the proposed legislation.
The Minister said that the deliberations aim to elicit the opinion of all concerned on the issues of depiction of violence, obscenity, gory and other unhealthy scenes on the electronic media. Shri Ready said that in the west, media has adopted self-regulation to a large extent and the endeavour now is to achieve this standard in India also. The Government has its own views on the issue but it is open and amenable to suggestions and new ideas. The effort would be to maximize the area of consensus through the dialogue.
In his introductory remarks, Secretary, Ministry of I&B, Shri Navin B. Chawla said that the meet would provide an opportunity for the appreciation of each others position.
