The Union Agriculture Minister Shri Sharad Pawar has asked the states to consider treating poultry as agriculture. Shri Pawar has written a letter to all the state governments in this regard and asked the poultry federations and industry to follow it up with their respective states. The Minister chaired the first meeting of re-constituted Central Poultry Development Advisory Council (CPDAC) here today.
The Poultry at present is not defined under agriculture or industry and therefore the benefits especially with respect to Sales Tax, Octroi and Land & Labour laws, Electric tariff etc. do not accrue to the poultry farming.
The Minister said that the government is keen to promote poultry by all means to support and supplement the rural economy. The rural backyard poultry, he said, is concept aimed at intermediate rung of poultry farmers, suitable NGOs and Self Help Groups in setting up of mother units.
Shri Pawar released feed standards for poultry in meeting. The CPDAC also discussed feed standards, strengthening of quarantine stations, training, trade and several issues related to poultry. The Meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Agriculture Shri Kantilal Bhurai, members from ICAR, APEDA, NAFED, NABARD and NCDC. Non-official members representing the Poultry Industry, Compound Livestock Feed Manufactures Association of India (CLFMA), NECC, World Poultry Science Association (Indian Branch) and poultry farmers.
