Indian Railways have initiated a process to develop special wagons to enable more than one truck to be carried in each wagons to optimize utilization of assets for introduction of Roll On Roll Off Scheme (RORO) for carrying loaded trucks. Introduction of this service will be considered once the wagon design is finalized.
Presently, Konkan Railway runs a RORO scheme whereby trucks are loaded on a train at the rate of one truck per wagon, at a point and transported to their destination.
The RORO scheme provides a door to door multimodal service with greater customer satisfaction besides being more fuel efficient and eco-friendly than through movement by trucks.
