ratification of rotterdam convention on hazardous chemicals

The Union Cabinet today approved the following proposals:

(i) For signing and ratifying by India the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in international trade; and

(ii) To designate (a) Deptt. Of Chemicals & Petrochemicals as Designated National Authority for industrial chemicals; and (b) Ministry of Agriculture as Designated National Authority for pesticides.

The objective of this Convention is to promote shared responsibility and cooperative efforts among parties in the international trade of hazardous chemicals.

The early signature and ratification of the Convention will enable India to participate in various Committees to be constituted under the Convention. It will also help in protecting human health and environment and prevent dumping of such substances in the country.
