rajiv gandhi national drinking water mission expanded; focus on improving water quality in over 2 lakh habitations

The Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram, has announced that all drinking water schemes have now been brought under the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission. Presenting the Budget Proposals for 2005-06 in the Lok Sabha today, the Finance Minister said that emphasis would be laid on tackling water quality in about 2.16 lakh habitations in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal and some other States. It has also proposed to increase the outlay for the mission from Rs. 3,000 crore in the current year to Rs. 4,750 crore in the next year.

The Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) which now operates in 452 districts is being extended in all the districts and an allocation of Rs. 630 crore has been proposed for the next year.
