Indian Railways earned Rs. 25062.48 crores from 491.76 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight during the ten months of the current financial year ending January 2005, compared to Rs. 22615.85 crores from 456.02 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 10.82 per cent.
Of the total earnings, Rs. 10645.30 crores came from transportation of 221.94 MTs of coal, followed by Rs. 1014.18 crores from 35.95 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 1236.42 crores from 12.05 MTs of finished iron and steel, Rs. 1198.08 crores from 30.07 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 2021.05 crores from 44.23 MTs of cement, Rs. 2616.26 crores from 38.09 MTs of food grains, Rs. 1091.96 crores from 24.01 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 2265.61 crores from 26.29 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) and Rs. 2973.62 crores from 59.13 MTs of other goods.
The freight traffic in Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKMs) in millions increased by 8.04 per cent from 312051 NTKMs in millions to 337138 NTKMs in millions.
Earnings per Million Tonne in crores increased by 2.76 per cent from Rs. 49.59 crores to Rs. 50.96 crores per million tonne. Earnings per Net Tonne Kilometre (NTKM) in paise increased by 2.57 paise from 72.47 paise to 74.34 paise per NTKM.
