President, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam today made five suggestions for success of total sanitation campaign. These five suggestions are: to start a mission to provide sanitary facilities to all households in all dwelling units by 2010; the mission is to be implemented by village panchayats with association of societal organizations; to organise training and workshop in connection with sanitation facility with public private partnership; the sanitation campaign will make a village community dynamic and also provide employment opportunities for villagers and children right from the age of three should be educated to become a part of sanitation campaign. President made these suggestions while addressing awardees and participants of Nirmal Gram Puraskar ceremony in New Delhi today. He was addressing a gathering while giving away awards to forty Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) 38 at the level of Gram Panchayat and 2 at the Block level. The President exhorted the awardees to take this mission of sanitary latrines to every house in another gram panchayats beside their own.
The Minister for Rural Development Dr. Raghvansh Prasad Singh emphasized that the rural areas need development. He said that there is a need to remove unemployment and build up infrastructure facilities in rural areas. He said that rural areas need information, education and communication and then follow up by implementation.
The Minister announced that every year in February Nirmal Gram Puraskar will be given to Panchayati Raj Institutions. The Minister also presented to the President a copy of strategy of sanitation campaign prepared by National Drinking Water Commission.
Shri A. Narendra, Minister of State for Rural Development, Smt. Suryakanta Patil, Minister of State for Rural Development and other senior officers of Ministry of Rural Development were also present in the function.
This was the first time that Nirmal Gram Puraskar is being awarded to successful PRIs in total sanitation campaign. The list of awardees are as follows:-
