new delhi to host the eighth meeting of commonwealth chief election officers

The Conference of Commonwealth Chief Election Officers is being held in New Delhi from 24th to 26th February, 2005 in which senior election managers from 37 countries will take part and discuss the ways of improving the management of elections in the Commonwealth countries. The Conference is being organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in cooperation with the Election Commission of India. Amongst those participating there will be 32 Chief Election Officers. The three-day Conference will be inaugurated by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Shri Somnath Chatterjee. Shri T.S. Krishna Murthy, Chief Election Commissioner of India and Shri Amitav Banerji, Head of Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Office will also address the Conference.

With the theme “Improving the Quality of Election Management” the Conference will focus on three areas in particular such as the role and nature of the Election Management body; the use of technology and the relationship between the election managers and political parties.

With a view to promote best practice in election management, the Commonwealth Secretariat has organised seven such conferences in the past twelve years. The last such meeting was held in the United Kingdom in the year 1998.

Following are the participating Commonwealth countries in the Eighth meeting of the Commonwealth Chief Election Officers: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Maldives, Malaysia, Namibia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Island, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda and the United Kingdom.
