The Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Shri Namo Narain Meena, has stressed the need for ensuring sustainable livelihoods to the people all over the world. Addressing the inaugural session of the ‘Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2005’, here today, Shri Meena also called for international action on the eradication of poverty, hunger and illiteracy from face of the earth.

“Unless timely action is taken by the international community to address these issues in all parts of the world, global prosperity would always remain under threat”, he added.

Shri Meena further said that sustainable development is intricately linked with the issues of new and efficient technologies. “To ensure regular and timely technology upgradation, it is necessary that enterprises have information on relevant technologies available in the international market and also within the country. We also need to invest in as well as increase our Research and Development capacity for effective technological upgradation” the Minister added.

Shri Meena pointed out that some key areas in this regard, which need attention, include access to information on state-of-the art technologies; framework for dissemination of information on the sources of availability of environmentally sound technologies; development of guidelines for transfer to technologies; and training of personnel to undertake technology assessment for the management of such technologies.
