The Government has made a provision of Rs.1,400 crore for the NHDP III which will four-lane 4000 kms of roads in the country. The Programme is to be launched in the next fiscal year. The NHDP III will target high-density highways not forming part of the Golden Quadrilateral or the North-South and East-West corridors. The NHDP has made steady progress with 5,172 kms being four-laned till the end of January 2005 under NHDP I and NHDP II.

A special package for the North-Eastern Region was announced. An allocation of Rs. 450 crore has been made for the purpose. In overall terms, the outlay for National Highway development has been increased from Rs.6,514 crore in Budget Estimate 2004-2005 to Rs.9,320 crore in 2005-06.
