The Union Cabinet today approved the setting up of a National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister. The Authority will be assisted by an Executive Committee of Secretaries, which shall be responsible for assisting the Authority to draw up a Disaster Management Plan, coordinating and monitoring its implementation and also coordinating the response to a disaster.

The Authority will enable specialized to all types of disasters in a minimum response time thus reducing the impact of the disasters and casualties. It will also enable the Government to address the disaster mitigation concerns effectively.

Pending passage of the Disaster Management Bill, 2005, NDMA and its associated Committees including the Executive Committee of Secretaries and the Advisory Committee of Experts will be set up by issuing an executive order.
