The Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has paid Rs. 70.87 crore as Interim Dividend to the Government. The dividend cheque was presented by Shri R.S.P. Sinha, CMD, MTNL to Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology here today in the presence of Dr. Shakeel Ahamad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology and senior officers of DoT and MTNL. The cheque presented today represents interim dividend for the year 2004-05 at the rate of 20 per cent (Rs. 2/- per share) on the paid up equity capital of Rs. 630 crore of the Governments holding in the Corporation which works out to Rs. 126 crore.
MTNL has been paying dividend at the rate of 45 per cent on its equity capital of Rs. 630 crore. During the last 5 years an aggregate amount of Rs. 1323 crore has been paid as dividend to shareholders including Rs. 744.15 crore to the Government towards their shareholding in the Company.
MTNL has been making all out efforts to increase its subscriber base in the two Metropolis of Delhi and Mumbai. It has provided approximately one lakh mobile connections during the month of January alone which is higher than any other operator in these two cities.
