Indian Railways have planned to upgrade selected freight stock maintenance infrastructure of identified depots, freight train examination points and freight sicklines by 2009-2010 at a cost of Rs. 71 crores.
This will improve safety, reliability and downtime of the freight stock resulting in increased availability of freight wagons. This will also reduce the intensive examination time for freight trains from the existing four hours to three hours and allow closed circuit rakes to run 6000 kilometres instead of 4500 kilometres between two successive examinations, imparting fluidity to the system.
Freight examination facilities like depots, examination points and sicklines over the Indian Railways system need to be upgraded to ensure faster turnout and efficiency of wagons and freight trains.
