Indian Railways have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) to produce 65 metres long rails which will be welded in Bhilai Steel Plant, to make a rail panel of 260 metres length.

These long rails panels will be directly transported to the site, thereby, reducing the number of welds. This is intended to improve safety of train services to the nation.

Production of 65 metre long rails has already started, while 260 metre long rail panels are expected in 2005-2006.

For transportation of such long rails, five mechanized rakes will be needed.
