The all-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees CPI(UNME) on base 1984-85=100, for the month of January, 2005 was released by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation here today, together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The all-India CPI(UNME) for January, 2005 is 440 which is four points more than the index for the previous month i.e. December, 2004. At the group level, the index for January, 2005 when compared to last month i.e. December 2004, has increased by 4.63 percent in respect of “Housing” group followed by 1.17 percent in respect of “Fuel & Light” group. With the corresponding all-India index for January, 2004 being 424, the index for the month of January, 2005 has shown a rise of 3.8% over a year.

Statement-1 gives the CPI(UNME) for all-India and 59 selected urban centres in the country for January, 2005; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI(UNME) for January, 2005 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for January, 2004 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for January, 2005 in respect of 59 selected urban centres with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely January, 2004. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from -0.5 to 9.1 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Kohima and the least in the case of Imphal. The increases are -0.5 t0 0.0 percent for 1 centre 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 8 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 30 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 13 centres and 6.1 percent and above, for 7 centres. As many as 36 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the all-India figure of 3.8 percent and 3 centres have recorded equal percentage increase while 20 centres have recorded higher percentage increase as compared to the all-India average.
