INTERPOL WING OF CBI HELPS RESCUE OF A SINGAPOREAN FROM CLUTCHES OF KIDNAPPERS

CBI's Interpol wing has played a vital role in the rescue of a Commodities Consultants of Singapore from the clutches of his kidnappers in India. Timely and prompt action by CBI has led to the rescue of Mr. R.Rajendran within three days of his kidnap. Mr. Rajendran, who had come for attending a conference in Chennai, was kidnapped for ransom on 31.01.2005.

On receipt of the information of the kidnap from Singapore Police and Interpol-Singapore, the Interpol Wing of CBI quickly contacted the State CID of Tamil Nadu. It also activated the Special Unit of CBI at Chennai for tracking the telephone numbers and locations from which the kidnappers were making telephone calls for ransom to the wife of the hostage at Singapore. Interpol-New Delhi remained in constant touch with the police officers of Singapore, who evealed that Mr. R. Rajendran had been allowed by the kidnappers to remain in touch with his wife on a particular phone number. It was also told that his local friends in Chennai Mr. K. Umapati of AVK Steels Private Ltd., Anna Nagar and Mr. A.Mohd. Faizi of Michael family, K. Nagar, Chennai were also trying to locate him since his kidnap in the evening of 31.1.2005. They revealed that one Dr. Muthu Kumar, was involved in the kidnapping and the wife of the victim was asked to bring the ransom money at Chennai Airport. They also gave Dr. Muthukumar's mobile number. All these inputs were immediately shared by CBI with Shri Abhay Kumar singh, SP/CID of Tamil Nadu Police. Singapore Police were also given the direct contact numbers of the officers of CID Tamil Nadu.

Later in the evening of 02.02.2005, the location of the hostage was found to be at Green Park Hotel in Kumbhkonam of Thanjavur District. The information was quickly shared with the Kumbhkonam Police. Past midnight of 3.2.2005 the hostage was rescued by the local police from the said hotel. Four persons, Karthikeyan, Vellu, Mohan, Manimuttu who were guarding the hostage were also arrested. They confessed to have kidnapped the victim from Chennai on the evening of 31.1.2005. They kept him at Minsuriti in Perambalur District on 01.02.2005 before taking him to Kumbhkonam. They revealed that five more persons were involved in the crime, which was masterminded by Dr. Muthu Kumar to whom the victim had provided consultancy for his firm in Salem. The firm had suffered losses. Therefore, he had planned this crime. The other accused also took away the chain, lap top and the passport from the victim. They waited for the arrival of the wife of the victim at some hideout in Chennai. Local police is in search of these persons.

The police have registered a case under section 365,342,323,395 IPC. Interpol-New Delhi has requested Singapore Police to ask their Mission in India for securing the safe custody of the victim and to issue Rajendran requisite documents for his safe exit as his passport has been taken away by his kidnappers.
