The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave its approval for implementation of the proposal for creating a consolidated computing infrastructure for Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax applications with an expenditure of Rs.167.05 crore. This scheme envisages establishing central servers and storage area networks along with disaster recovery infrastructure having capacity to handle all transactions relating to Customs, Central Excise and Data Warehouse and establishing that would connect a total of 70 Customs locations with ICEGATE for allowing users to log in into the central servers. Currently, the customs network extends to 23 locations only. Under the scheme, a network that will connect all Central Excise Commissionerates to the central server will be established. Central Excise does not have a network as of now.
The Scheme will ensure better service levels to trade, better information system for CBEC, more manageable and secure systems. It will be financially more viable than distributed systems.
